Here is an interview with Nicolas Djermag, the professional actor who will play René Duguay-Trouin, in conversation with Laurent Gentilhomme:
Nicolas Djermag: “I’m embarking on a fantastic human adventure”
Nicolas Djermag, you will play the lead role of the corsair Duguay-Trouin. How does a professional actor end up in a project like Terra Aletia?
I’ve often worked with Natacha Gerritsen, the show’s co-author, particularly doing voice-overs for Damien Fontaine’s shows, for many years now. I even worked as a props assistant on the Paris show, and I found the human connection with the extras really wonderful. So I didn’t hesitate when I was offered this role. I’m embarking on a fantastic human adventure.
A human adventure, but also an incredible marathon of 80 performances?
It’s certainly an endurance test, from July 9th to August 23rd. There’s no way I could be replaced! It’ll be a long stretch, and on top of that, this kind of show demands insane discipline with the tempo. There’s no room for improvisation. It’s really a very musical piece of work, and that’s the main challenge of the role.
Does the life of 19th-century corsairs speak to you?
Well, first of all, I know the region very well — the Côtes d’Armor. During Terra Aletia, I’ll be staying with an aunt who lives near Saint-Malo. And I love the sea, and I believe there will be some sword fights! I’m also really glad to be working in a church. As a Christian myself, that means something to me.
After Terra Aletia, where can we see you next?
I’ll need to take a vacation first after such a marathon! And I’m currently working on a one-man show for 2027. I’m hoping to present it at the Avignon Festival.
